There is a problem that many homeowners face on an ongoing basis, and that is a problem with unwanted pests. I’m not talking about human invaders to your home, I’m talking about insects. To be certain, they are the bane of our existence in many cases and it is something that we would love to be rid of. Unfortunately, getting rid of those bugs has not always been easy.
In most cases, people will contact a pest control service to get rid of a problem with cockroaches, ants, fleas or other types of pests. This may be effective in some cases, but it often requires expensive, ongoing treatments and it leaves behind a chemical that is harmful to your family, including your pets. Fortunately, there is a way to rid your family of this problem and it is not only simple, it is cheap and harmless.
Rather than fill your home with toxic fumes from a commercial pest control service, you can simply run to your local grocery store and grab some boric acid. You can find it in the cleaning aisle, as it has often been used for doing laundry. Boric acid is a naturally occurring substance that you will find it everything from plants to seawater. It turns out that it is also one of the most effective treatments for getting rid of household pests and it is super cheap to buy.
One of the reasons why boric acid is so powerful is because it destroys the stomach lining of the insect so that they can digest food. Before long, they are dead! Of course, in order for this process to work, the pest has to eat the product. It doesn’t work if it is only on the outside of the body.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches are hardy pests that can be quite difficult to get out of the home. There is no way to fully get rid of them off of the planet and we would not want to do so anyway. If you’re ready to get them out of your home, however, grab some borax.
You can create a special meal for your cockroach visitors and it will be the last real that they ever eat. Boil one dozen eggs and discard the whites. Mash together the yolks and 2.5 ounces of borax in a bowl. Add half a cup of white sugar and if necessary, keep adding sugar until it is no longer crumbly and is like dough.
Put these little yolk bombs around the house and the cockroaches will eat them up to their own destruction.
Ants
Ants can also be extremely difficult to get out of the home. Once they have taken a foothold, it seems as if they just keep coming back.
Armed with the right natural ingredients, however, you can not only get rid of the ants in the home, you could kill the entire colony. This is done by using honey, which ants can’t resist.
Mix borax and powdered sugar in a 1:3 ratio. If you want a liquid mixture, mix 1/4 cup of borax with three-quarter cups of honey or maple syrup.
Look around for the ants and when you find them, put some of this they down along the ant trail. You could even spread some on the wall if that is where they have been traveling.
Be sure to sprinkle some borax and powdered sugar onto flat services so that the workers will take it back to their queen.
You can also use this mixture in a plastic lid in the garden and it doesn’t hurt the plants.
Fleas
Controlling fleas is also possible with borax. A single treatment can keep your home free of fleas and their eggs for up to a year.
Be sure that your home is cleaned and vacuumed, because that will remove many of the fleas from their place. You also want the borax to be able to go down into the areas where the fleas exist and do its job.
Sprinkle borax directly on the carpet, in your closets or anywhere that the fleas may hang out. You could even sprinkle a little bit where your pets tend to hang out as well. Work the borax into the carpet and fabrics with a broom. Keep your pets and children out of the room while you’re doing the treatment.
Vacuum up any visible borax that may be left over. Within 36 hours, the fleas should be gone.
Borax may be cheap but it is very effective as a method for controlling pests in the home.
