Blind Engineer Invents World’s First ‘Smart Cane’ Which Uses Google Maps To Help Blind People Navigate

Thanks to cutting-edge technology, many everyday items have been re-imagined to provide more functionality. Everyday items such as smart planters to smart TVs have served to enrich our lives with new options and higher productivity.

While many of the newest technological creations are devoted to entertainment, there are still many which also contribute to our well being, especially those who live with a disability of some sort.

Recently, a revolutionary smart cane called WeWalk was introduced to assist blind people in navigating their surroundings much more efficiently when they are on their own.

Kursat Ceylan is the  CEO and co-founder of Young Guru Academy (YGA), the Turkish non-profit behind WeWalk. Ceylan is also the visually impaired engineer who invented the smart cane.

Being blind himself, Ceylan understands firsthand the kinds of challenges people like him face and decided to put his expertise and knowledge into inventing something that would significantly improve the quality of people’s lives.

“In these days, we are talking about flying cars, but these people have been using just a plain stick. As a blind person, when I am at the Metro station, I don’t know which is my exit… I don’t know which bus is approaching… which stores are around me. That kind of information can be provided with the WeWalk,” he told CNN.

The smart cane aides visually impaired people by using smart technology, some of which you may use every day.

It uses built-in speakers, google, a voice assistant, and sensors that send vibrations to warn about obstacles above chest level.

The smart cane is available on the company’s website at around $500.
