How To Turn Condensed Milk Into Delicious Homemade Caramel

When it comes to making delicious homemade desserts, caramel is a staple ingredient to have handy. And if you’re going to be whipping up a lot of goodies, whether for a bake sale, the holidays or for any occasion, you’ll want to have a few cans of the golden sweet stuff on hand.

Of course, buying store-bought caramel is always one option, but if you want to save some money and like to make food at home, this is the way to do it. Plus, you can avoid all those harmful synthetic ingredients.

All you’ll need to pull this off is one or more cans of condensed milk and a big, deep pot of hot water.

The first step is to peel off the label. Then stick the can in the pot. Make sure that the can is completely covered with water. Next, bring the pot to a simmer.

Now, it’s very important to ensure that the cans don’t open while in the pot, as they could possibly explode from the heat.

Once you’ve got the water nice and hot, just leave the pot on simmer for about three hours.

Make sure you check the pot regularly to ensure that everything is still covered.

Once the cans are finished cooking, just let them cool overnight, or at least 6 to 8 hours.

When you’re ready to start baking, all you have to do is open the can and presto! Now you’ve got yourself some homemade caramel!

Since caramel is just technically heated sugars, that usually has some butter or milk added to it, this cooking-in-a-can method works perfectly. After all, sweetened condensed milk is just milk and sugar.

This simple trick can be a great money saver as you can use any brand of condensed milk, even the cheapest kind.

Plus, you can make as many cans as you want at the same time — as long as you have room in your pot, of course.
