These Lava Lamps For Kids Make A Fun Summer Project

When children are in school during the wintertime, their attention is often divided between home and school. Typically, the school district does a fairly good job of keeping them busy between homework and other projects that may consume their attention during the evenings. It is something that they may not appreciate, but most parents appreciate the fact that their children have something that keeps them busy during those times.

When the summer rolls around, a child may have more difficulty because their attention is able to wander in any direction that they want. They quickly become bored, or they may retreat into the electronic devices that are often found in their hands at all times. That is why many parents tried to do some sort of project with their children to interact with them on a regular basis and, quite simply, to have a little fun at the same time.

If you would like to do a project with your children, this is one that you are going to appreciate. It allows your children to make a lava lamp that is not only beautiful, it is functional as well. It might even surprise you that these lamps are extremely easy to make and, more than likely, you already have all of the supplies on hand that are necessary to make them. All that is really needed is for you to gather the children together, put the supplies in front of them and give them a little general guidance as the lava lamps are made.

In order to get started, you will need some form of a transparent container. Perhaps a Mason jar would be best but as long as it is transparent and has a lid, it will allow your children to see the magic taking place as these lamps come together. Enjoy!

Materials

Clear Water/Soda Bottles with Lids (make sure they’re cleaned before using)
Vegetable Oil
Water
Food Coloring
Alka-Seltzer Tablets
Sparkles (optional)

Directions

Pour vegetable oil in the bottles until they’re about 3/4 of the way filled.

Next fill up with water.

After the water is added add 10 drops of food coloring in each bottle.

Now add your glitter (if using). You can also experiment with sequins, small beads, etc.

Now it’s time to add the Alka-Seltzer tabs. Once they’re added your lava lamps will really come to life! Place a cap on the bottles as to not spill the liquids and save to use again in the future!
